CHP, also referred to as ‘combined heat and power’ or ‘cogeneration’ is the process of simultaneously generating electric power and heat in means of hot water, steam or chilled water by using gas engines or other means of generation.
CHP / Cogeneration can improve energy savings by approximately 40% compared to the separate purchase of electricity from the national electricity grid and a gas boiler for onsite heating. So after payback in 2-3 years, CHP can cut your energy costs by up to 40%
CHP can reduce carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to the separate means of traditional generation via a boiler and power station.
The process of CHP generates electricity whilst also capturing usable heat that is produced in this process. By using engine or exhaust wasted heat, CHP plants can reach efficiency ratings in excess of 80%. This compares with the efficiency of gas power stations, which in the UK which range between 49% and 52%. Coal-fired plants fare less well with an efficiency of around 38%.
CHP plants provide local heat, electricity and sometimes even cooling to different types of users. Because the energy is produced locally, CHP has the added advantage of avoiding efficiency losses incurred through transmission and distribution of electricity through the National Grid and local distribution networks. Around 7% of energy would usually be lost when the network is used to transport energy from the generation source to the user.
Genovate is at the forefront of supplying Combined Heat and Power units in the UK. We have continued to enhance our offering, improving the design and installation process and integrating CHP with our broader range of energy solutions.
Benefits of using CHP Gas Engine
The high efficiency of a CHP plant compared with traditional bought in electricity and site-produced heat provides several advantages including
We can utilise heat from the following source in CHP application
Type of heat and cooling we can generate from Combined heat and power (CHP) gas engine
