CHP can reduce carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to the separate means of traditional generation via a boiler and power station.

The process of CHP generates electricity whilst also capturing usable heat that is produced in this process. By using engine or exhaust wasted heat, CHP plants can reach efficiency ratings in excess of 80%. This compares with the efficiency of gas power stations, which in the UK which range between 49% and 52%. Coal-fired plants fare less well with an efficiency of around 38%.

CHP plants provide local heat, electricity and sometimes even cooling to different types of users. Because the energy is produced locally, CHP has the added advantage of avoiding efficiency losses incurred through transmission and distribution of electricity through the National Grid and local distribution networks. Around 7% of energy would usually be lost when the network is used to transport energy from the generation source to the user.

We can utilise heat from the following source in CHP application

• Engine jacket cooling water
• Engine lubrication oil cooling
• First stage air intake intercooler
• Engine exhaust gases
• Engine generator radiated heat, second stage intercooler

Type of heat and cooling we can generate from Combined heat and power (CHP) gas engine

• Hot water typically on a 70/90˚C flow return basis and can be interfaced with the site at a plate heat exchanger or exhaust gas heat exchanger
• Steam by utilising the heat from the gas engine exhaust by using waste boiler. The engine exhaust gases typically leave the engine at between 400 and 500˚C. This can be used directly for drying, in a waste heat boiler to generate steam, or via an exhaust gas heat exchanger combining with the heat from the cooling circuits. 
• Larger steam volumes by using two side combi steam boiler, one side will generate steam from the heat from the gas engine exhaust and the second side will generate steam from natural gas.
• Cold water by using absorption chiller
